I choose this illustration as it is
a beautiful image which displays a real issue in the world today. There are
those who protest or stand up against actions or laws they consider wrong and
are met with hostility from either the opposing sides or a government.
What kind of
illustration is this?
This is an illustration brings both awareness
and a protest to an issue.
What is the purpose
of the illustration?
The purpose of the illustration is
to not only to give awareness and/or to protest a wrong doing of currently
going on today but also to show there is a little bit of hope for a better
world. That while these issues have and are occurring does not mean it still cannot
change.
What was the context
in which the illustration appeared?
Yuumei created this piece after a
protest to free Bradley Manning, in which she participated in. There were a
small group of people, about thirty at most, which were met by large number of
riot police, almost double the protesters. The protesters left peacefully to avoid
arrest. The riot police remained in her mind, however, and having been born in
China she realized how dangerous the protest could have become. It also coincides
with her comic “Fisheye Placebo” in which she is protesting the censorship of
the internet taking place in certain countries including China.
What is the message
of the illustration?
The message is despite the many
forces which seek to oppress an individual you can be and are free.
Who is the intended
audience of the illustrated message?
Honestly, I think the message is
for everyone. It is for those who are oppressed to give them a little hope for
a better world. It is for the oppressors to try and humanize the oppressed and
maybe put the thought in their minds that there is a better way to deal with
the issues they are facing. Finally, I think it for those who do not think
these issues affect them. It tries to get them to help and stand up for a
cause.

objective of the illustration?
The communication objective of the
illustration is that you are still free despite the constraints place upon you
and those constraints do not always have to be there. Peace does not have to
end in violence.

created in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Windows.
Who is the
illustrator? Where do they live? Where do they work?
Wenging Yan known mostly as Yuumei
is a self-employed artist. She has studied different styles of art but her own
is more reflective of Japanese animation. Most of her work is digital and her
main focus in her works are cyber activism and environmentalism. She is
currently living California but was originally from China.
